A busy day for Saturday for Kansas as high school state football championship games took place.
Former Salina Central running back Malik Veal and former Salina South wide receiver Zach Nachbar played big roles in the West’s 21-6 win over the East in Saturday night’s Kansas Shrine Bowl football game at Pittsburg State University.
Nachbar was the top target for West and Garden City quarterback Greyson Tempel, catching touchdown passes of 17 and 2 yards in the third quarter, helping the West overcome a 6-5 halftime deficit. Nachbar had six catches for 77 yards.
Veal was a big special teams weapon, connecting on field goals from 40 and 45 yards. Veal also hit his only extra point attempt. Veal finished with nine carries for 18 yards and three catches for 6 yards.
Nachbar will play at Butler Community College this fall, while Veal will continue his career at Coffeyville Community College.
