Salina South Volleyball Aims to Improve in 2013

Mike Hammett - September 1, 2013 10:07 pm

The Salina South volleyball team is looking for improvement in 2013.
The Cougars struggled in 2012, finishing 8-30 and 1-10 in AVCTL Division I. The Cougars capped the season with a first-round loss in sub-state.
Fourth-year head coach Christy Fritz returns five starters from last season.
Seniors Kortney Borcherding, Shelbie Witt and Cadie O’Donnell along with juniors Andrea Alstatt and Amanda Clayton are back for the Cougars.
“Our girls are very excited about the season,” Fritz said. “Our seniors are great leaders and our young girls are ready to work hard. We have struggled the last two years to get back to where South volleyball used to be, and my girls are ready for the challenge.”
The Cougars opened the season on Saturday with six losses at the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League preseason tournament in Hutchinson.
The Cougars lost 25-15, 25-7 to Salina Central, 25-14, 25-20 to Andover Central, 15-25, 25-23, 25-20 to Campus, 25-16, 25-19 to Andover, 25-20, 25-10 to McPherson and 25-19, 25-21 to Newton.
Bailee Stamps had 15 kills, while O’Donnell had 59 digs. Olivia Streit tallied 30 assists.
