Saint Mary Holds off KWU

A 14-0 run midway through the second half helped the Saint Mary men’s basketball team turn a deficit into a lead, and held off Kansas Wesleyan 77-69 on Thursday night at the Ryan Sports Center in Leavenworth.
After a slow start to the game, Kansas Wesleyan caught fire. Down 9-4, the Coyotes went on a 12-0 run, taking the lead on a three by Braxton Stein. The Coyotes built the lead on buckets from Michael Johnson and Dominique Johnson.
Saint Mary answered with a 7-0 run to take a 17-16 lead on a three by Grant Greenberg. Just seconds after Greenberg’s three, Dane Brinker buried a three, giving the Coyotes the lead again.
Wesleyan would go up as much as six at 26-20 on a basket by Jacob Lunz. The Spires then racked up eight straight points to go up 28-26 on a three-point play by Xavier Young.
The Coyotes answered right away again on a three by Brock Borovetz to go up 29-28, and extended the lead with another three by Michael Johnson.
Saint Mary used another 7-0 run to take a 35-32 lead, before the Coyotes scored four of the final six points of the half to close within one at the break, 37-36.
In the second half, the lead continued to swing back and forth. Down 43-41, the Coyotes used a 7-0 run to retake a 48-43 lead on a three by Borovetz.
With KWU up 50-44, Saint Mary held the Coyotes scoreless for over five minutes, going on a 14-0 run in that span, hitting three three-pointers and finishing a three-point play.
Down as much as 11 at 66-55, the Coyotes put together a 12-4 run to pull within three on a three by Dominique Johnson with 1:55 to play.
The Coyotes had a chance to tie or pull within one, but couldn’t convert. Saint Mary hit free throws down the stretch to pull away.
Saint Mary was led by Grant Greenberg’s 19 points, while Torren Dowdy and Shiron Williams added 13 each. Kansas Wesleyan was paced by 15 points each from Dominique Johnson and Borovetz.
The Coyotes drop to 4-19 and 2-11 in the league. Saint Mary is 15-8, 9-4 in the KCAC.
