KSAL Sports - January 17, 2014 11:47 pm
The Sacred Heart Knights have made the play-offs for the fifth consecutive year with a 35-0 win at Moundridge.
Thanks in part to a wild boys game, Sacred Heart earned a doubleheader split at Ellsworth on Friday night. The Ellsworth girls used a big second half run for a 49-35 win, while the Sacred Heart boys came back and held on by a score of 56-53.
The Lady Knights and Lady Bearcats went back-and-forth with the two teams trading the lead early in the game. Sacred Heart led by as many as four points at 9-5 and Ellsworth led by three points twice, including a 12-9 score to end the opening quarter. Between the first and second quarters, the Lady Bearcats went on a 15-4 run to lead by seven points late in the first half and, ultimately, a 20-15 advantage at halftime.
Sacred Heart came right back to start the second half having scored the last two points of the second quarter and the first five points of the third quarter to tie the score at 20-20. From that point on, though, it was all Ellsworth as the Lady Bearcats went on a 19-2 run. The score was 30-22 after three quarters and 39-22 midway through the fourth quarter. Sacred Heart fell behind by as many as 19 points, but managed to score the last five of the game including a Karli Alverez three-pointer at the buzzer.
The Lady Knights have lost seven straight games and fall to 2-7 overall and 0-5 in the NCAA league. Cara Donley led Sacred Heart in scoring with 22 points.
Early in the boys game, it looked like Sacred Heart would make short work of Ellsworth, but things didn’t work out that way. The Knights opened the game on a 10-0 run and held the Bearcats scoreless for the first seven minutes. After trailing 10-4 heading into the second quarter, Ellsworth came all the way back to cut the deficit to a single point and make the score 12-11. Sacred Heart ended the first half on a 14-5 run of their own to make the score 25-17.
Within the first ten seconds of the third quarter, the teams traded fouls and a wild second half was underway. The Bearcats tied the game four times in the third quarter only to watch the Knights reclaim the lead each time. Finally, with the score 35-33, a three-point basket gave Ellsworth their first lead of the game and a 36-35 advantage heading into the final quarter. Sacred Heart took the lead back at 37-36, then Ellsworth answered to make the score 38-37. Sacred Heart then answered with an 8-0 run to give them the lead for good. In the end, Ellsworth missed a last-second shot that could have tied the game and Sacred Heart held on for a three-point road victory.
Sacred Heart improves to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the NCAA league. Brooks Brown led the Knights with 13 points. Austin Palen added 11 points.
Sacred Heart begins games in the Salina Invitational Tournment next Monday and Tuesday. The girls will face Andover at Salina South at 6pm Monday evening.
