Sacred Heart ended its season Saturday night in the 3A Marion substate championship game with a 46-36 loss to top-seeded and top-ranked Hesston.
The Sacred Heart Knights got their 2013 football season off on a winning note with a hard fought 28 to 0 victory over the Celtics of Hutch Trinity.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Knights took control of the game in the second stanza. With just under 8 minutes to go until half, Trevor Webb got the Knights on the board with an 80 touchdown run on a counter play. The Knights next drive stalled out near midfield, but when Sacred Heart punted the ball it hit a Celtic player in the back and the Knights recovered at the Trinity 37 yard line. Sacred Heart made quick work of the short field and scored on a Nick Wuthnow to Tate Richards TD pass.
The key play of the game followed when, with less than 15 seconds to go in the half, Sacred Heart’s Clayton Wetter picked off a Michael Doeden pass and rambled 40 yards into the end zone to make the score 21 to 0 at the half.
The last score of the game came with 4:19 left in the third quarter when Kyler Stover scored from a yard out.
One other note of interest, Knight placekicker Tymony Bonilla, with a strong wind at his back, attempted a 44 yard field goal that just missed when the ball hit the right upright.
Next up for Sacred Heart, the home opener next Friday against Republic County.
