Mustangs Stampede Campus

Two big first half performances pushed Salina Central to a pair of routs of Campus in Haysville on Friday night, with the girls winning 85-28 and the boys winning 75-41.
In the girls contest, the Mustang offense was in sync from the opening tip. The defense wasn’t quite there, allowing Campus to hang around early.
In an uptempo first quarter, Salina Central buried six three point baskets, with three coming from MacKenzie Morris. However, Campus stuck with the Mustangs, trailing just 21-15 with one minute to play in the quarter.
Then, the Mustang defense arrived in full force.
The Colts would get just two more field goals in the half, while the Mustang offense kept rolling. Central scored the final seven points of the opening quarter to lead 28-15 after one. In the second quarter, the Mustangs built as much as a 30-point lead before taking a 50-22 lead to the locker room.
The second half was more of the same, as the Mustangs continued to steadily pull away, with the 85-28 final serving as the largest lead for Central at 57 points.
From the one minute mark of the first quarter on, Central outscored Campus 64-13.
Emily Wood led Central with 22 points, while MacKenzie Morris added a career high 17. Hailey Mayfield added 12 points for the Mustangs. Hayley Leeper led Campus with 9 points.
Central improves to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in AVCTL I. Campus drops to 2-5 and 1-4 in AVCTL I.
In the boys contest, it was no contest. Central removed all doubt from the game with a quick 20-0 run to open the game and never looked back. The Mustangs led by as much as 32 in the first half in cruising to the 48-22 halftime lead.
In the second half, Campus would get as close as 23 in the third before Central rebuilt the lead up to as much 32 in the quarter, leading 64-32 going to the fourth.
Jordan McNelly led the Mustangs with a career-high 28 points. He had a double-double with 11 rebounds. Treyton Hines added 18 points.
The Mustangs are 5-2 overall and 4-0 in AVCTL I. Campus is 1-6, 0-5 in the league.
Central hosts Maize on Tuesday.
