Mustangs Split in McPherson

Mike Hammett - December 6, 2013 9:53 pm

Salina Central came oh-so-close to pulling off the rare sweep of McPherson at the Roundhouse in McPherson on Friday night. The Mustang boys lost 61-58, while the girls picked up a 61-43 win.

In the boys game, it looked like it wouldn’t be much of a contest early, as McPherson sprinted out to a 16-3 lead. However, the Mustangs would regroup and score 21 of the next 30 points to get within one at 25-24.

McPherson responded, scoring 12 of the next 15 points to take a 37-27 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Central opened strong, going on a 14-2 run to take a lead at 41-39 on a three by Brayden Neuschafer. The lead would change hands two more times before the Mustangs tied the game at 45. Then, Central took a lead on a three by Treyton Hines to go up 48-45 after three quarters.

In the final frame, Central built a 6-point lead at 53-47 on a bucket by Jordan McNelly with 5:20 left. However, McPherson turned the tables, scoring 14 of the final 19 points for the win.

McNelly had a career night for Central with 24 points and 14 rebounds, going 16-for-21 at the foul line. Max Kuhn had 10 points for Central.

The Mustangs shot 37 percent from the floor and 18-for-25 from the line at 72 percent. McPherson hit 46 percent of its shots and was 15-for-20 at the line for 75 percent. Central outrebounded McPherson 32-28.

Salina Central drops to 0-1 and hosts Andover Central on Tuesday.

In the girls contest, the Mustangs opened up a big lead early and were never threatened. The Mustangs were up 9-4 early, but used a 19-0 run from midway through the first quarter until midway through the second quarter to lead 28-4. The Mustangs led 34-13 at halftime.

In the second half, the Mustangs used an 8-0 run and stifling defense to take a 29-point lead at 42-13. McPherson would chip away at the lead later in the game, getting as close as 16 down the stretch before the Mustangs won 61-43.

Shaelyn Martin tallied her 15th career double double. Martin had a career high of 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Emily Wood tallied 13 points. The Mustangs outrebounded McPherson 27-24. Free throws and turnovers were a big difference as well. Salina Central hit 25-of-29 free throws at 86 percent, while McPherson connected on just 12-of-28 charities at 43 percent. The Bullpups turned the ball over 29 times to 20 for Central.

Salina Central is 1-0 and hosts Andover Central on Tuesday.
