Mustangs Conquer Vikings

staff - January 20, 2014 9:33 pm

The odds were clearly stacked in favor of the #1 seed Salina Central Mustangs entering their game with the #8 seed Smoky Valley Vikings on Monday night at the brick house. Central was 9-0, ranked #3 in class 5A, and the Vikings had just one win to their name against a win-less Pratt squad. Salina Central showed why they were the top seed in the girls bracket with a dominating 76-16 victory.

Central would score the first seven points of the game before a Hannah McBride basket put an end to the run with 3:20 left in the first quarter. The Mustangs would go on to score the final 10 points of the period, and led 17-2 after one. Central opened the second quarter on a 15-0 run, and had a commanding 39-4 lead at halftime.

With a commanding lead already in hand, Central kept their foot on the gas pedal, scoring 11 unanswered to begin the third quarter, and had a 56-8 advantage at the end of three. The Mustangs outscored the Vikings in the fourth 20-8, and won in impressive fashion 76-16.

All 12 Mustang players tallied minutes, and all 12 scored in the game, led by 16 points from Emily Wood. Hailey Mayfield added 12 and Shaelyn Martin recorded her 16th double-double of her career with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Smoky Valley was led by 6 points from Hannah McBride.

Salina Central set new S.I.T. records in total points in a single game (76) passing the old record of 69 set by Salina South last year against Sacred Heart, and largest winning margin (60) thwarting the previous record of 45 also set by South last year against the Knights.  The 16 points from Smoky Valley tie the fewest scored in the four year course of the girls tournament, which Concordia set last year against Salina Central.

The Mustangs are now 10-0 on the year and move on to the semi-finals of the tournament as they take on 4th seed Abilene at the BiCentennial Center on Wednesday.
