Mustang Girls Roll Past St. James

The Salina Central girls basketball team picked up just the second state tournament win in program history with a 63-31 thrashing of seventh-seed Saint James Academy on Thursday at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka.
After Central raced out to a 6-2 lead, the Thunder answered with a 6-0 run to lead 8-6 with 2:58 to go in the first quarter. After a timeout, the Mustangs went on a 10-0 run, with Emily Wood burying two three-pointers, to give Central a 16-8 lead. St. James picked up the final bucket of the quarter, and Central led 16-10 after one.
In the second quarter, St. James would get within five at 19-14, but Central answered, closing the half with 12 of the final 17 points to build a 12-point lead at 31-19.
In the second half, Central continued to pour it on. Shaelyn Martin scored eight straight points to take the Central lead from 10 to 18 at 41-23. Central was up 43-24 after three quarters.
In the final frame, Central continued to coast, building as much as the final 32-point margin of victory.
Central was led by Shaelyn Martin’s 22 points and seven rebounds. Wood added 13 points and Hailey Mayfield chipped in 11 points and six rebounds. St. James was led by Julianne Smith’s 13 points.
Salina Central is now 22-1 overall and meets third-seed Great Bend (21-2) in the 5A semifinals after the Panthers defeated Seaman. St. James ends the season at 17-6.
