Mustang Cross Country Looks for Depth

Mike Hammett - August 28, 2013 4:00 pm

The Salina Central cross country teams continue to try and build under second-year coach Josh Gooch.
The Mustangs return just three varsity runners between the boys and girls squads, including state-qualifying junior Daniel Villarreal. The Mustangs also bring back sophomore Easton Ryser and sophomore Lindsey Wood is the only returner for the girls.
While the numbers aren’t quite where Gooch wants them, the runners he does have are excited to be on the team.
“We are young with a lot of eager kids that are ready to prove themselves,” Gooch said.
Gooch said he’d like to see more kids out for cross country.
“The more kids I have out the more fun it is for them and the more they will push each other,” Gooch said.
Gooch is looking for sophomores Andrew Rutherford and Casey Campbell to help out with the boys team, while juniors Shea Myers and Hayley Sydow look to help the girls team.
“Our goal this year is to qualify a guy and a girl to state in Lawrence,” Gooch said.
The Mustangs open the season Saturday, September 7 at Manhattan. The Mustangs run at Bill Burke Park in Salina on Saturday, October 12.
