For a second straight week, a Kansas Wesleyan Men’s Soccer has earned KCAC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Junior goalkeeper Alex Montiel was selected as the KCAC Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for his play in a pair of matches last week for the Coyotes.
Wesleyan won twice last week, notching a 2-1 victory over previously unbeaten Southwestern Christian (Okla.), and a 1-0 upset victory over No. 6 ranked Concordia (Calif.) in Baldwin City on Sunday.
A native of La Puente, Calif., Montiel played in both matches for the Coyotes, entering the Southwestern Christian match in the 27th minute when Blessing Ngwa was injured and recorded six saves as the Coyotes won the match 2-1.
On Sunday, Montiel was huge in goal for the Coyotes against No. 6 Concordia. While facing a total of 20 shots by the Eagles, he recorded six saves on the way to a clean sheet as the Coyotes picked up a 1-0 win in the neutral site match at North Park Soccer Complex in Baldwin City.
The two wins boosted the No. 23 ranked Coyotes’ record to 3-1 on the season. Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday when the Coyotes head to Atchison to take on the No. 17 ranked Benedictine College Ravens. The match will follow the women’s match between the Coyotes and Ravens which begins at 5 p.m.
