Maize Rips South

The Maize Eagles pulled away from Salina South in both games on Friday at the Salina South gym, as Maize picked up a 44-18 win in the girls contest, and a 55-43 win in the boys game.

Maize picked up an early 11-6 lead, but South answered back with a 6-0 spurt, capped on a basket by Zach Nachbar, to take a 12-11 lead with just over a minute to go in the first quarter. Maize got the final point of the quarter on a free throw by Caleb Wilcox to tie the game at 12 after one.

In the second quarter, Maize took control. The Eagles outscored South 14-6 in the quarter, using a 10-0 run to build a 26-15 lead. South closed the half with a three-point play by Trace Kochevar to get back within eight at 26-18 at halftime.

In the second half, South got back within six to open the half on free throws by Shawn Smith, but Maize answered, pushing the lead right back to 10. South answered with a three-pointer by Justin Stonebraker to get within seven at 30-23.  Maize answered with back with an 8-2 run to close the quarter, and led 38-25 after three.

The Eagles pushed the lead out to as much as 21 in the fourth quarter, before South mounted a late charge to cut the final margin to 12.

South was led in scoring by 13 points from Trace Kochevar. Maize was led by Aaron Shaw’s game-high 21 points.

Salina South is 7-10 overall and 3-7 in AVCTL Division I, while Maize improves to 14-3 overall and 8-1 in the league.

Salina South hung in early against Maize thanks to its defense. The Cougars forced nine first half turnovers by the Eagles, and Maize shot just 33 percent from the floor. However, Keiryn Swenson started strong for the Eagles, scoring the team’s first nine points and 11 of their 15 in the first half. Maize went up by double digits for the first time at 15-5 on Brayden Byrd’s put-back with 40 seconds to go in the second quarter. The Eagles led 15-5 at the break.

Maize hit its stride in the second half, scoring the first six points of the half to make it a 12-0 run going back to the second quarter, leading 21-5 with 6:04 to go in the quarter. South would get no closer than 15 the rest of the way, as Maize stretched the lead to as much as 29 down the stretch. Kaci Isaacson banked in a half court shot at the final buzzer to bring South within 44-18.

Holloway led South with 11 points, while Swenson led Maize with 13 points.

Salina South drops to 3-14 overall and 1-9 in AVCTL Division I. Maize is 13-4, 8-1 in the league.
