Lady Knights Substate Comeback Falls Short

KSAL Sports - March 4, 2014 10:39 pm

The Sacred Heart girls trailed the entire game at Southeast of Saline Tuesday night, but made what could have been a blowout, an exciting game down the stretch as the Lady Trojans held on for a 59-55 win.

Southeast of Saline began the game by scoring the first five and last six points of the opening quarter and led 13-4. Sacred Heart trailed by as many as 12 points early in the second quarter, but a 7-0 run cut the deficit to 16-11. The Lady Trojans answered and took a 24-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Lady Knights closed the gap to two points at 28-26, but the Lady Trojans answered with a 10-0 run to quickly extend the lead to double figures for the second time. Sacred Heart cut the lead back down to nine points, but after three quarters, Southeast of Saline led 40-31. Early in the fourth quarter, the Lady Trojans built their biggest lead at 45-31, but the Lady Knights refused to go down quietly. Sacred Heart cut the deficit all the down to one point twice late in the game. The Lady Knights trailed 54-53 and 56-55, but that was as close as they could get. Three late free throws allowed Southeast of Saline to escape with a four-point substate win.

Cara Donley led Sacred Heart with 37 points. 20 were scored in the fourth quarter. Erica Montgomery led Southeast of Saline with 12 points. The Lady Trojans improve to 14-7 and advance to the substate semifinals at Marion Friday night. Sacred Heart ends its season at 7-14.
