KWU Women Rally Past Bethel

Kansas Wesleyan’s women’s basketball team erased a 16-point deficit, rallying for a 57-54 win at Bethel on Thursday night in North Newton.

Early, the Coyotes and Threshers traded buckets. The Coyotes had a 13-12 lead on a three-point play by Karlie Steinle with 10:34 to go in the half. The Coyotes would build the lead to three at 17-14 on back-to-back buckets by Alecia Smith and Steinle. The Coyotes would get just one field goal the rest of the half.

Bethel would then go on a 16-0 run, holding the Coyotes scoreless for over five minutes. Bethel capped the run with back-to-back threes by Brieanna Zerger and Samantha Wilkerson. The Threshers held on for a 34-22 halftime lead.

In the second half, Kansas Wesleyan would rally, but first, the hole would get bigger. Bethel would go up 16 at 40-24 on a basket by Taylor Durant with 17:37 left. Then, the Coyotes took over.

Kansas Wesleyan went on a 15-2 run to get back in the game. A three by Alecia Smith with 10:49 left brought the Coyotes within three at 42-39.

Bethel would pull back out to an eight point lead at 51-43 with 5:22 left on six straight points from April Harpe. However, the Threshers scored just three points the remainder of the way.

The Coyotes closed back wtihin one within one at 53-52 with 1:25 left on a three-point play by Christian Cassity. After a free throw by Lauren Ulrich, the Coyotes got a three in the right corner from Vanessa Kresin to go up 55-54, taking their first lead of the second half.

Bethel’s off-balance runner by Ulrich missed, and the Coyotes secured the rebound and the win.

Cassity led the Coyotes with 15 points, with 13 coming in the second half. Steinle added 12. Harpe led Bethel with 28 points and 16 rebounds.

Kansas Wesleyan improves to 14-14 overall and 9-8 in the KCAC, while Bethel drops to 11-16 and 5-12 in the league.
