KWU Women Coast to Win Over Saint Mary

The Kansas Wesleyan women’s basketball team posted a 71-56 win over Saint Mary to close the 2013 portion of the schedule on Saturday at Mabee Arena.
The Coyotes sprinted out to a 13-3 lead on a three by Alecia Smith. Saint Mary would sneak back into the game, tying the contest at 24 on a basket by Allison Zaldivar. The Spires closed within a point again at 28-27 when Kansas Wesleyan went on a big run.
The Coyotes started the run by shooting out to a 38-30 halftime lead. In the second half, the run continued. The Coyotes went on a 32-11 run overall, going from up 28-27 to up 60-38 on a three by Shelby Heim with 9:22 left. Saint Mary would get no closer than 16 the rest of the way.
The Coyotes were led in scoring by Alecia Smith with 20 points. Christian Cassity added 15 points and Karlie Steinle had a career high 10 points. The Coyotes outrebounded the Spires 42-35, and hit 41 percent of their shots from the floor to 30 percent for Saint Mary.
The Coyotes are 6-7 on the year and 2-2 in the KCAC. They are off until January 3rd when they host Doane in the Coyote Classic.
