KSAL Sports - September 5, 2013 6:08 am

In front of a loud, boisterous crowd in Mabee Arena, the Kansas Wesleyan Volleyball team opened both the KCAC and home portion of the 2013 schedule with a 25-14, 25-17, 25-22 sweep of the University of Saint Mary on Wednesday night.

Wesleyan improved its record to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in the KCAC with the win, while Saint Mary fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Back-to-back blocks by Breanee Schultz and Klover pushed Wesleyan’s lead to 22-10 and Lauren Chamness would close the set with a kill for the 25-14 win.

The second set started out with Wesleyan taking a 4-0 lead, but Saint Mary got back within two at 7-5. The Coyotes would respond with back-to-back kills by Brittaney Miller and Klover and after a Saint Mary timeout, Chamness would put down another kill to make it 10-5.

A 6-0 run by the Coyotes would push the Wesleyan lead to 16-6 in the set. Wesleyan kept Saint Mary at arm’s length to finish the set, getting several players valuable court time in the process. Schultz would put down a kill to end the set and give Wesleyan a 25-17 win.

Saint Mary took an early 7-3 lead in the third set, but the Coyotes would rally to tie the score at 9-all on a kill by Chamness and then use back-to-back blocks to take an 11-9 lead and two more kills from Chamness to push the advantage out to 13-9.

Wesleyan would maintain the lead in the set, but the Spires were able to get within a point at 23-22 before a Chamness kill would set up match point and a block by Melissa Blair and Caitlin Chamness would close out the match with a 25-22 win for the Coyotes.
