The 2013-14 Kansas Wesleyan basketball season kicked off with the first edition of “Late Night with the Coyotes” on Saturday night at Mabee Arena.
All players for women’s and men’s teams were introduced, and several contests preceded the final intrasquad scrimmages on the night.
The night started with women’s coach Ryan Showman and men’s coach Chris Fear squaring off in a game of Pop-A-Shot. Fear narrowly knocked off Showman, 70-68.
After the teams were introduced, Brock Borovetz and Garrett Pasold from the men’s team, and Christian Cassity and Alecia Smith from the women’s team competed in a three-point contest. Borovetz defeated Pasold and Cassity knocked off Smith to advance to the finals, where Borovetz picked up the title, 16-12, over Cassity.
Non-basketball playing students were allowed to challenge a classmate in a competition to make a lay-up, free throw and a three-point shot. The freshman players swept the challenge, while the sopohomore students knocked off the players, and the juniors split the challenges.
After two returning players from each team addressed the crowd, the teams played intrasquad scrimmages.
On the women’s side, the purple team picked up the 15-12 win on a three with two seconds left.
In the men’s game, the gold team coasted to a 16-8 win over the purple team.
