In their third meeting this season, Sacred Heart defeated Southeast of Saline when it mattered most. The Knights advanced to Saturday's 3A substate championship game at Marion with a 54-41 win.
It took overtime for the girls and a second half comeback by the boys, but Sacred Heart swept a doubleheader against Hutchinson Trinity in Salina Friday night. The girls won 41-38 and the boys won 50-37.
In the girls game, other than one tie, the Knights led the entire first half. Sacred Heart led by eight points three different times in the first quarter and were up 16-10 after the opening eight minutes of the game. With the score 20-14, a 6-0 Trinity run tied the score for the first time at 20-20 late in the second quarter, but a Cara Donley basket in the final seconds gave the Knights a 22-20 lead at halftime.
The teams combined for only ten third quarter points as the Knights maintained a 28-24 lead. Early in the fourth quarter, Sacred Heart led 28-26, but a three-point basket gave the Celtics their first lead of the game. Hutchinson Trinity took its biggest lead of 34-30, but the Knights clawed their way back to tie the score 34-34 at the end of regulation. In overtime, the Celtics led one final time at 35-34. The Knights tied the score at 35-35, and other than one more tie at 38-38, led for the rest of the extra session and held on for a three-point win.
Sacred Heart improves its overall record to 5-9 and remains 1-5 in the NCAA league.
The boys game was a tale a two halves. Other than a 5-5 tie score, the Knights led throughout the first quarter, but were struggling with turnovers and their shooting. With the score 12-8, a 6-0 run to start the second quarter gave the Celtics their first lead. The teams were tied for a second time at 14-14 and traded the lead back-and forth, but a 7-0 run by Hutchinson Trinity gave them a 24-19 advantage at halftime.
A three-pointer early in the third quarter gave the Celtics their biggest lead of the game. That was immediately followed by a 10-2 run by the Knights to tie the score at 29-29. The game was tied for the fourth and final time at 31-31. From that point, late in the third quarter and into the fourth quarter, Sacred Heart went on a 14-0 run to put the game away. Leading 37-31 after three quarters, the Knights would eventually be ahead 45-31 on their way to a 13-point win.
Sacred Heart is now 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the NCAA league.
