Knights Split With Broncos

KSAL Staff - December 17, 2013 11:23 pm

The Sacred Heart Knights began their NCAA league schedule in Salina Tuesday night with a doubleheader split with Russell. The Russell girls won 32-24 and the Sacred Heart boys won 68-30.

In the girls game, the Lady Knights scored the game’s first points and led 5-4 after the opening quarter. Sacred Heart didn’t trail in the game until a Russell basket early in the second quarter. The Lady Knights led again with the score 7-6, but a 10-0 run by the Lady Broncos gave them the lead for good. In a low-scoring game, Russell led 17-9 at halftime.

The third quarter scoring output was identical to the first quarter as Sacred Heart outscored Russell 5-4 to make the score 21-14 going into the final quarter. The Lady Knights closed the gap to as little as five points at 26-21, but Russell held on for an eight point win.

Cara Donley led the Lady Knights in scoring with 14 points. McKenzie Kack and Tracie Thibault each added four points.

Sacred Heart falls to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the NCAA league.

Russell quickly scored the opening basket in the boys game, but the 2-0 lead would be short-lived. After being held scoreless for the first couple of minutes of the opening quarter, Sacred Heart exploded for 21 straight points. Two Russell free throws early in the second quarter stopped the run and made the score 21-4. The Knights scored another 23 points and led 44-17 at halftime.

Sacred Heart was ahead 62-24 after three quarters, and with a continuously running clock and all starters on the bench, each team scored six fourth quarter points as the Knights went on for a 38-point blowout win.

The Knights had five players that scored in double figures. Lucas Comfort scored 13 points off the bench. Austin Kack added 12 points, Tate Richards scored 11, and Kane Comfort and Austin Palen each scored 10 points.

The Knights improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the NCAA league.

Sacred Heart finishes 2013 with a boys and girls doubleheader at Minneapolis Friday night. Pregame is at 5:50 with the girls tipoff at 6pm and the boys to follow. Both games will air live on Classic Hits 104.9 and online at www.1049classichits.com.
