Sacred Heart ended its season Saturday night in the 3A Marion substate championship game with a 46-36 loss to top-seeded and top-ranked Hesston.
Class 3A District 13 play kicked off on a snowy night in Gypsum, as two big NCAA rivalries took to the field. After all was said and done Sacred Heart, much like last year, came away with a victory over Southeast of Saline by a final score of 21-8.
The Trojans began with the football and quickly went three and out and on their first drive of the game. Sacred Heart was quick to strike, as a seven play drive turned into six points for the Knights with Trevor Webb scrambling into the end zone from five yards out. The extra point was missed and Sacred Heart lead early 6-0.
Another three and out drive from Southeast of Saline gave the ball back to Sacred Heart, and the Knights used a long 13 play drive to put three points on the board with a 27 yard field goal from Tymony Bonilla. Sacred Heart pushed their lead to 9-0.
Trevor Webb would intercept a Cody Schlesener pass on the next Trojans drive, and with a short field to work with, it didn’t take long for the Knights to find the end zone, as Nick Wuthnow took it in from six yards out. With the extra point the Knights led 16-0 late in the second quarter, but Southeast of Saline put points up on their final drive of the half. A 18 yard touchdown pass from Schlesener to Kyler Sager cut the Knights lead in half. At the break Sacred Heart led 16-8.
The Knights would add a 30 yard field goal from Bonilla and a safety in the 4th quarter from linebacker Clayton Wetter to push their lead to 21-8. Nick Wuthnow would pick off Schlesener on the final Trojans drive, and Sacred Heart secured the 21-8 win.
The Knights are now 6-1 overall on the regular season 1-0 in class 3A district 13 play. The Trojans fall to 5-2 overall 0-1 in district 13. Next up on the schedule for the Knights is their final home game of the 2013 season vs. Ellsworth before closing out the year on the road in Lyons.
