KSAL Sports - March 9, 2014 12:53 am

Sacred Heart ended its season Saturday night in the 3A Marion substate championship game with a 46-36 loss to top-seeded and top-ranked Hesston.

The Knights began the game with a Colton Von Lintel three-point basket and led by as many as five points in the opening quarter at 7-2. The Swathers rallied to tie the game for the first time at 7-7, then ended the first quarter with a three-pointer from Grant Raleigh to take their first lead of 10-9.

Sacred Heart regained the advantage in the second quarter and again led by as many as five points at 15-10, but Hesston came back to tie the score at 19-19. The Knights went back on top 21-19, but it turned out to be their last lead of the game. Hesston again tied the score, then took a 22-21 lead in the locker room at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Swathers built their biggest lead of 33-23 and remained on top 35-28 heading into the final frame. Sacred Heart got as close as 41-36 late in the game, but Hesston scored the last five points, all from the free throw line, to advance to the 3A state tournament with a 10-point win.

The Knights were led in scoring by senior and co-captain Austin Palen with 12 points. Sacred Heart ends its season with a record of 15-8.
