The Southwestern Moundbuilders rally from an 11-point deficit to defeat Kansas Wesleyan 24-14 in Winfield on Saturday night.
The Coyotes started off strong, scoring on a five-play drive, finishing with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Trey Dallas to Zach McClain to give the Coyotes a 7-0 lead.
The Moundbuilders answered on the next drive with a 45-yard field goal by Chris Mayer to trail 7-3.
The teams would trade possessions before the Coyotes scored again, this time on Taylor Sachs’ 52-yard touchdown run, putting KWU up 14-3 with 13:39 to play in the half.
The Coyotes wouldn’t score again.
Two possessions later, the Coyotes turned the ball over on downs at the Southwestern 34-yard line. The Moundbuilders then went on an eight-play, 66 yard drive, resulting in an one-yard touchdown run by Brady May, pulling Southwestern within four at halftime, 14-10.
In the second half, Southwestern took control. The Moundbuilders took the lead on Spencer Pullen’s 11-yard touchdown run, putting Southwestern up 17-14.
Southwestern added to the lead early in the fourth quarter when Dallas’ pass was intercepted by Lorenzo Fouts and returned 20-yards for a touchdown, pushing the Moundbuilder lead to 24-14.
The Coyotes would threaten just once down the stretch, using 30 and 44 yard pass plays to Joe Vela to put KWU at the Southwestern 7-yard line. However, Terry Stecker missed a 27-yard field goal, and the Coyotes didn’t see the ball again as Southwestern ran out the final 4:20 of the game.
Dallas was 10-for-27 passing for 199 yards with a touchdown and four interceptions. Sachs had 17 carries for 75 yards and a touchdown.
The Coyotes had 323 yards of offense on just 56 plays. The Coyotes had over 80 plays each in their first two games. Southwestern had 437 yards, including 307 on the ground.
