The Ell-Saline Cardinals finish the 2013 season with a winning record thanks to a 22-0 win over the Bennington Bulldogs on Thursday night in Bennington.
The game hinged on ball control and defense. Both teams were limited to under 300 yards.
The teams traded punts early, but Ell-Saline slowly tilted the field position in their favor. After a Bennington fumble was recovered by Evan Morrical at the Bennington 28 yard line, the Cardinals scored in seven plays. Justin Schmutz capped the drive with a 1-yard run, putting Ell-Saline up 6-0 with 3:05 to go in the first half.
The score would hold until the break.
In the second half, both teams put together long drives on their second possession. Bennington would turn the ball over on downs at the Ell-Saline 30, setting up the Cardinals for a long drive. Ell-Saline gained the 70 yards over 13 plays, taking 6:14 off the clock, capping the drive with a 6-yard run by Schmutz to lead 14-0 with 9:22 left in the game.
Bennington would turn the ball over on downs on the ensuing possession, and Ell-Saline added one final score on a 1-yard plunge by quarterback Louie Arceo to take the 22-0 lead.
Schmutz led Ell-Saline with 168 yards and two scores. B.J. Glanton led Bennington with 72 yards on the ground.
Ell-Saline outgained Bennington 248 to 159.
Ell-Saline finishes the season 5-4, while Bennington goes 2-7.
