Heartbreak for Southeast in Regional Final
KSAL Sports - May 22, 2014 7:55 am
The Southeast of Saline baseball team was one out away from playing in next week’s Class 3A state tournament in Topeka, but top-seed and undefeated Council Grove scored twice with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to take the regional championship at Dean Evans Stadium on Wednesday.
The Trojans had a 1-0 lead, taking advantage of a Council Grove error in the second inning to score its lone run. Southeast made the lead stand until the seventh inning.
In the final frame, it appeared Southeast had turned a game-ending double play, but umpires waved the play off, ruling the ball had hit in foul territory before being fielded by first baseman Jacob Pengra. Eventually, Council Grove’s Tanner Langvardt reached on an error to put two men on with just one out. Southeast recorded the second out on a strikeout, but the ball in the dirt for the third strike allowed the runners to advance to second and third. A wild pitch allowed the tying run to score, and following an intentional walk, a second wild pitch allowed the winning run to score.
Southeast won the regional semifinal game over Minneapolis 10-1 to reach the championship. Cole Sauber and Cody Schlesener each had three hits, while Kayden Besher picked up the win on the mound.
Southeast ends the season at 20-2.
