Hawks Win State Opener, Eagles Fall

In the Class A state tournament in Burlington, the Salina Hawks Junior American Legion baseball team won their opener, defeating Junction City 8-0.
Jason McCartney gave up just three hits in the shutout. He added three hits, including a double. Sam Mermis had a pair of doubles and drove in three runs.
The Hawks play Ozawkie at 6pm today.
Ozawkie advanced with a 7-2 win over the Salina Eagles. The Eagles surrendered seven walks and hit a batter. Tyler Short suffered the loss after pitching five innings. Tanner Thaxton had two hits to lead the offense.
The Eagles play Junction City in an elimination game at 10am today.
