The Salina Falcons come up short in their rally attempt in the bottom of the ninth inning, as Pittsburg holds on for a 6-3 win in the first round of the Class AAA state baseball tournament at Larks Park in Hays.
The Falcons were down to their final strike in the ninth when Matt Rowe hit a single to center. Rowe advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches before Conner Boyer joined him on base when he was hit by a pitch. Dalton Dooley then hit a sharp grounder to short, but Matt Standlee made the stop and recorded the out at second to end the game.
Pittsburg took an early lead in the top of the first on RBIs from Brett Macary and Cody Grilz. The Falcons answered in the second with an RBI by Kyler Stover and Robert James scoring on a passed ball.
Pittsburg regained the lead in the fifth on Grilz’s RBI single, and added two more in the seventh on RBIs by Christian Cedeno and Grilz. Pittsburg pushed the lead to four in the eighth on Wade’s run-scoring infield single.
The Falcons added a run in the eighth when Mason Brightbill followed Keenan Breen’s triple with an RBI single.
V.J. Piccini picked up the complete game win for Pittsburg, while Daniel O’Brien worked seven-plus innings in the loss.
The Falcons play Newton at 10am Thursday in an elimination game. Live coverage will begin at 9:50 on SportsRadio 1150 KSAL.
