Ell-Saline Powers Past Remington

Ell-Saline found win number one of the season with a 44-16 win at Remington on Friday night.
It was Justin Schmutz’s night for the Cardinals, rushing for 207 yards and three touchdowns in the game.
Remington would get on the board first as Blake Thunberg hit Wyatt Lear for a 35-yard scoring pass, putting the Broncos up 8-0 in the second quarter.
Ell-Saline answered with the first of Schmutz’s scoring runs, this one from two yards. Schmutz picked up the conversion as well, tying the game at 8.
The Cardinals took a halftime lead as Cody Walters threw a touchdown pass to Nathan Fouard. Schmutz picked up the conversion again, giving the Cardinals a 16-8 halftime lead.
In the second half, Ell-Saline continued to pound away with Schmutz. Schmutz picked up scoring runs of two and nine yards, and a pair of two-point conversions, as Ell-Saline built a 32-8 lead.
In the final quarter, the Cardinals continued to pull away. Walters ran in a touchdown from eight yards out to push the lead to 38-8. Remington got back on the board late, but the Cardinals answered with Garrett Jacobson’s 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Walters finished 6-of-8 passing for 130 yards. Jacobson added 77 yards on the ground on 11 carries.
Ell-Saline is 1-1. The Cardinals play their home opener this week, hosting Moundridge in our Area Game of the Week on True Oldies 98.5.
