The Ell-Saline Cardinals struggled in their season opener, falling to Marion, 35-6.
It was all Marion in the first half. Taylor Heidebrecht hit Grif Case for a 47-yard touchdown pass to give the Warriors a 7-0 lead after a quarter.
In the second quarter, Marion added to the lead as James Jones hauled in a 60-yard touchdown pass from Heidebrecht for a 14-0 lead. Case then caught his second touchdown of the night, this time from 19 yards, giving Marion a 20-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, Ell-Saline got on the board as Justin Schmutz had the 16-yard touchdown run, cutting the Marion lead to 20-6.
However, Marion would pull back away. Heidebrecht had a 51-yard touchdown run, putting Marion back up 28-6 after three. In the fourth quarter, Trevor Kruse added a 1-yard touchdown run to seal the win for the Warriors.
Schmutz led Ell-Saline on the ground with 18 carries for 118 yards. He also caught the only two completed passes for 37 yards.
