Ell-Saline Advances in Morris/Stephens Classic

The Ell-Saline basketball teams won their first round games in the Amos Morris/George Stephens Classic on Monday night in Lincoln.

The Ell-Saline boys rallied from a 44-26 second half deficit to win 59-54 in overtime. The Cardinals used a 24-2 run in the late third quarter and early fourth quarter to take a 50-46 lead. However, Russell would force a tie and overtime.

In the extra frame, Ell-Saline would outscore Russell 8-3 to pick up the win.

Louie Arceo led Ell-Saline with 18 points. The Cardinals are 1-1 and face Nickerson on Friday in the semifinals.

In the girls contest, Ell-Saline took a 19-9 lead after a quarter and was up 32-18 at halftime before cruising to a 45-35 win.

Paige Johnson led the Cardinals with 19 points, hitting on four of five three-point attempts.

Ell-Saline is 1-1 and will face Lincoln in Lincoln on Friday.
