STERLING – For the first time since the 2008 season, the Kansas Wesleyan Volleyball team won a match in the Gleason Center at Sterling College. The Coyotes improved to 2-0 in the KCAC with a straight set sweep of the Warriors on Wednesday night, winning 25-21, 25-22, 25-13, evening their overall record to 7-7.

In the opening set, Wesleyan jumped out to a 10-2 lead thanks to four blocks during the run. Sterling was able to regroup and get within four a couple times, and got within three at set point at 21-24, but a setting error on the Warriors gave the Coyotes a 25-21 win.

The second set was a closer game as neither team could pull away. Wesleyan broke a 9-9 tie with a kill by Lauren Chamness and would take a lead that would not be relinquished the rest of the set. The Coyotes built as much as a four-point lead at 17-13 and again at 21-17, but Sterling got back within a point at 21-20 before a Caitlin Chamness kill would make it 22-20. Breanne Schultz would put down a kill for set point giving the Coyotes a 25-22 win.

Wesleyan jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the final set, but Sterling would get back within a point at 12-11. That’s when the tide turned deep purple. After a Sterling attack error, Taylor Elkinton would serve six times as the Coyotes would open up an 18-11 lead. The Coyote lead would hit double digits on Brittaney Miller‘s kill that made it 23-13, and Miller would kill a ball to end the match giving the Coyotes the straight set win.

Schultz had 10 kills to lead the Coyotes to go along with seven blocks. Elkinton handed out 22 assists and Marlene Yang had 15 digs for the Coyotes. Wesleyan had a total of 11 team blocks on the evening as Wesleyan’s block was working well on the evening.

Next up for the Coyotes is the 2013 LaQuinta-KWU Volleyball Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Mabee Arena and Muir Gym on the KWU campus. Wesleyan plays Central Methodist at 4 p.m., Friday and then plays St. Thomas – Houston at 8 p.m., Friday. On Saturday, the Coyotes take on John Brown at 10:30 a.m., before closing the invitational against No. 24 ranked Wayland Baptist at 3 p.m.
