Coyote Volleyball Splits Opening Matches in Miami

The Kansas Wesleyan volleyball team opened the season with a split of a pair of matches at St. Thomas University in Miami, Fla.

The Coyotes fell to the hosts 19-25, 27-25, 25-11, 22-25, and 15-8 in the first match of the day before rallying for a 15-25, 22-25, 25-12, 25-23, 15-10 win over Indiana Tech.

Against St. Thomas, the Coyotes sprinted to a 5-0 lead in the first game and never let St. Thomas closer than three the rest of the way in the 25-19 win. Game two was tight, with neither team leading by more than three points the entire way. However, KWU led 24-21 before STU scored six of the next seven points to win the game, 27-25. St. Thomas used the momentum to build a 15-2 lead in the third set and cruised to a 25-11 win. In game four, the Coyotes turned it around, grabbing the early 5-1 lead. STU would close within one, but would never tie as the Coyotes held on for a 25-22 win. In the final game of the match, STU built an 8-3 lead and never looked back in the 15-8 victory to take the match.

Lauren Chamness led the Coyotes with 15 kills, while Taylor Klover added 13. Taylor Elkinton had 40 assists, while Brittaney Miller tallied 17 digs and Marlene Yang added 12.

Against Indiana Tech, the Coyotes let the game get away from them in the middle portion. The Coyotes trailed 13-8 before Indiana Tech scored six straight points to pull away for a 19-8 lead and a 25-15 win. In game two, the Coyotes led 6-4 before Indiana Tech scored five straight to take the lead. KWU tied the game at 14, but Indiana Tech never trailed again, but never led by more than four points in the rest of the game in picking up a 25-22 win. In game three, the Coyotes started to turn their fortunes. KWU led 13-10 before scoring 10 of the next 11 points to pull away for the 25-12 win. In the fourth game, it was tight once again. At first, it looked like Indiana Tech was on its way to a match win, leading 7-1 and 16-10. The Coyotes chipped away at the lead, scoring four straight points to get within two at 16-14. Indiana Tech would rebuild a four-point lead at 20-16, but the Coyotes scored nine of the final 12 points to rally for a 25-23 win. In the final game, the Coyotes used the momentum to build a five-point lead at 8-3. Indiana Tech closed within two at 10-8, but the Coyotes bounced back and held off the charge for a 15-10 win to take the match.

Breanne Schultz led the Coyotes with 14 kills, while Chamness added 13 and Klover 11. Elkinton had 43 assists. Yang led the way with 19 digs while Miller added 17.

The Coyotes are 1-1 on the season. KWU plays Evangel at 8am and No. 17 Missouri Baptist at 2pm on Saturday in Miami.
