The same old story continues for the Kansas Wesleyan men’s basketball team. The Coyotes hung around, but ultimately came up short for the ninth straight time in an 84-77 loss to No. 20 York on Friday night at Mabee Arena.

In the first half, the Coyotes would weather a few flurries by the Panthers. York would build an eight point lead at 27-19, but the Coyotes responded with seven straight points, with four from Michael Johnson and a three-pointer by Brock Borovetz pulling the Coyotes within one at 27-26.

After a York bucket, the Coyotes would tie the game at 29 on Borovetz’s three, and then took the lead on a foul-line jumper by Dane Brinker with 2:30 to play in the half.

The two battled back-and-forth for the rest of the half before the Coyotes took the halftime lead on Brinker’s lay-up, going up 41-40 at the break.

In the second half, the Coyotes opened with a 6-2 spurt to build the lead to five at 47-42. York would answer with an 8-0 run to surge in front 50-47. The Coyotes answered back with a  7-0 run, regaining the lead on a basket by Garret Pasold. However, York used another 8-0 run to take a 60-56 lead with 12:38 left.

The Coyotes tied the game at 60 with 11:42 to go on a three by Dominique Johnson, and regained the lead on a bucket by Dominique Johnson later in the half at 64-63. However, York immediately went back in front on a three by Reggie Sonnier to lead 66-64, and never looked back. The Coyotes had three chances with the game down to two points, but could never tie or take the lead.

Brock Borovetz matched his career high with 27 points, while Dylan Hidalgo had a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists. Dane Brinker added 14 points and Dominique Johnson had 11.

Dylan Brewer led York with 34 points and 11 rebounds, while Andrew Vaughn had 24 points.

York is 9-3 while KWU drops to 2-11. The Coyotes host Doane on Saturday at 6pm in the final game of the Coyote Classic at Mabee Arena. The game can be heard on Classic Hits 104.9.
