Cougars Sweep Colts

One week ahead of their mid-season tournament, the Salina South Cougars got much needed wins at home against an Ark Valley opponent, sweeping the Campus Colts.
In girls action, South would score the first six points of the game before Campus got on the scoreboard. The Cougars lead after one 7-4. The South offense would breakout in the second quarter, using a 9-2 run the first 2:15 of the period, but Campus would close the final 3:15 of the quarter on a 5-2 run and cut the South lead to five at halftime 17-12.
Campus would take their first lead of the night with 5:20 left to go in the third at 21-20, but South closed the quarter on an 8-0 run and lead after three 28-21. The Colts would get no closer than five points in the fourth, and clutch free throw shooting down the stretch by the Cougars proved the difference, as South picked up their first win of the year by a final score of 44-36.
The Cougars were led by career highs in points from Emilee Holloway (19) and Bre Hogan (9). Campus was led by Jordan Keck’s 11 points. The Lady Cougars improve to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in league play. Campus falls to 2-6 and 1-5 in the AVCTL I.
In the boys game, the outcome was never in doubt, as South cruised to the 69-39 win.
The Cougars would went on a 9-0 out of the gate, but Campus fought back with a 6-0 run of their own to cut the South lead to three, but that’s as close as they would get the rest of the night. A 10-2 run over the final 4:00 of the first quarter would give South a 19-8 lead after one. South would outscore Campus 21-9 in the second quarter and lead 40-17 at halftime.
Quarter number three would see the Cougars outscore the Colts 19-8 and lead 59-25 at the end of the third. Coach Hooper let the backups finish out the game, and South defended their home floor with a 69-39 win.
Justin Stonebreaker lead all scorers with 16 points. Aaron Mar and Zach Nachbar each had 11. The Colts were led by by Kellen Schutt’s 13 points. South improves to 3-5 overall 1-4 in league play while Campus drops to 1-7 and 0-6 in the league.
South will be back on their home floor on Friday night, entertaining another AVCTL I opponent in the Hutchinson Salthawks.
