Paced by a state championship performance from doubles duo Zachary Hampton and Jeffrey Michel, the Salina Central boys tennis team added another Class 5A state championship to the program’s storied history on Saturday in Topeka.

Hampton and Michel had to get by Salina South’s Matt Berneking and Pierce Carey in the semifinals, winning 6-0, 6-1, before taking the title over Newton’s Josh Carlgren and Riley Kingsley 6-1, 7-6 (7-0). Berneking and Carey defeated a team from St. Thomas Aquinas 6-1, 6-3 to take third.

Jack Weiner added a third place finish in singles for Central. Weiner lost to Seaman’s Todd Rillinger in the semifinals before bouncing back for a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kapaun’s Mason Born for third place.

Central’s Thomas Hampton and J.D. McHenry finished 11th in doubles.

At the 3-2-1A state meet in Goddard, Sacred Heart’s Stratton Brown finished as state runner-up. He lost the state championship match to Johnny Goodwin of Kansas City Christian 6-1, 6-0.
