Salina Central picked up its second sweep of the week, as the girls’ basketball team beat Newton 60-37, and the boys pulled away for a 62-45 victory.
In the boys game, the Mustangs hit back-to-back threes from Tanner Robl and Max Kuhn to open the game leading 6-0.
The Mustangs would lead 11-3 when Newton battled back to cut the lead to three at 11-8. Central led 14-10 after one.
In the second quarter, Central and Newton battled back and forth early, but the Mustangs were able to score the final seven points of the half, capping it on a three by Kuhn to lead 28-17 at the break.
In the third, the Mustangs pushed the lead to 13 at 36-23 on a basket by Jordan McNelly, and again at 38-25 on another McNelly bucket. Newton would close to within six with 54 seconds to go in the third quarter. However, the Mustangs scored the final four points of the quarter to lead 44-34 after three.
In the final frame, Newton made it an eight point game at 47-39 with 6:08 left, but an 11-0 run by the Mustangs over the next three minutes took any doubt out of the game.
The Mustangs were led by McNelly’s 21 points, with 17 coming in the second half. Kuhn added 14 and Brayden Neuschafer had 10.
The Mustangs are 2-1 on the year and 1-0 in AVCTL Division I.
In the girls game, it was all Salina Central. The Mustangs scored the game’s first 13 points as Newton struggled to squeeze off shots, let alone score. Central led 13-0 before Newton got on the board with just under one minute to go in the first quarter.
Newton scored the first bucket of the second quarter, but then Central went on an 11-0 run, capped on a bucket by Shaelyn Martin, to go up 24-5 with 5:14 to play in the half.
Newton would score five straight points before Central closed the half on an 8-0 run, finishing with a three by Brooke Peters to lead 32-10 at the break.
In the second half, the Mustangs led by as much as 27 as Central cruised to the win.
Hailey Mayfield matched her career high in scoring in the first half with 13 points, and finished with 18 points. Martin led the way with 20 points for the Mustangs, and added 11 rebounds for her 16th double-double.
The Mustangs are 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in AVCTL Division I. Central visits Maize South on Tuesday in a non-league game.
