Central Leads Way as Area Wrestlers Qualify for State

After a busy Friday for some and Saturday for all, the field is set for next weekend’s state wrestling tournaments.

Salina Central finished third as a team and qualified nine wrestlers for next weekend’s state tournament at Saturday’s Class 5A regional at Wichita Heights.

The nine Mustangs and four Salina South qualifiers will wrestle next Friday and Saturday in Park City at Hartman Arena in the Class 5A state tournament.

Central claimed three regional titles, with junior Dayton Will (145 pounds), sophomore Dalton Peters (160) and sophomore Kyle True (170) winning. Freshman Donivyn Will (132) was regional runner-up, while freshman Gunner Rairden (106) and sophomore Jack Helvey (182) placed third. Sophomore Chance Sorell (113), sophomore Easton Ryser (152) and senior Vince Johnson (285) finished fourth and claimed state tournament berths.

Salina South had one regional runner-up as senior John McNabb (152) finished second. Freshman Allen Heberly (120), senior Tyler Irwin (126) and junior Cole Hoover (195) all finished in third place at regionals.

Sacred Heart will send one representative to the Class 3-2-1A tournament at Hays, as senior Nick Wuthnow kept his undefeated season alive with a regional championship at 182 pounds in Hoisington.

Also at Hoisington, Southeast of Saline managed to qualify four wrestlers for state. Senior Jim Weller was a regional champion at 126 pounds, while senior Kreal Smith (160) and senior Keith Short (170) were second. Senior Jason Martinez placed third at 195 pounds.

Other state qualifiers from area schools are listed below. We will have state wrestling reports once per hour on Friday on SportsRadio 1150 KSAL starting at 9am and running until 6pm, and on Saturday from 9am to 4pm. We will continuously update ksal.com with the latest.

Sophomore T.J. Ragnoni was second at 132 pounds.
Sophomore Kyler Mick was second at 152 pounds.

Senior Ty Nienke was regional champion at 113 pounds.
Senior Marshall Barkow was third at 132 pounds.
Junior Zach Martin was third at 138 pounds.
Senior Mo Rojas was champion at 145 pounds.

Junior Rocky Krueger was fourth at 113 pounds.
Senior Joe Myers was third at 182 pounds.
Senior Colton Panzer was fourth at 195 pounds.

Freshman Cannan Smith was second at 126 pounds.
Senior Jacob Griffith was fourth at 160 pounds.
Junior Quentin Clark was regional champion at 195 pounds.

Senior Fritz Berger was regional champion at 285 pounds.
