Seat Belt Saves Woman’s Life

The Kansas Highway Patrol credits a seat belt with saving a woman’s life Tuesday morning.

According to the agency, 26-year-old Misty Dawn Schartz of Ellis was driving her 2007 Dodge Nitro when a semi was accelerating on the shoulder and pulling out into the driving lane. Schartz struck the semi.

According to KHP Trooper Tod Hileman, Schartz was standing outside of her badly damaged car when first responders arrived.She was transported to the hospital in Hays with non-life threatening injuries.

The 61-year-old driver of the semi wasn’t injured.

Hileman credits the seat belt with leaving Schartz’s life.

The crash happened Tuesday morning at 8:22 about 10 miles west of Hays on Interstate 70.
