Twenty Kansas State University students are getting a boost with their undergraduate research projects as the inaugural recipients of research and travel grants from the university’s Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry.
“Kansas State University is looking toward the future and meeting our visionary 2025 plan to be a Top 50 public research university,” said Anita Cortez, director of the Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry. “Undergraduate student research is a key component of our 2025 plan and is a highly beneficial aspect of the educational experience in preparation for students’ next steps, whether that be graduate or professional school or entering industry.”
The Undergraduate Research Award grants are $1,000 for the semester. Recipients work under the guidance of a faculty research mentor. They get the opportunity to network with other researchers, make contributions to their research field, and present, perform or exhibit their work publically.
The Undergraduate Travel Award grant recipients will be reimbursed for travel cost associated with their research, such as to attend or present at a conference.
The following students have received an Undergraduate Research Award grant or Travel Award grant from the Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry:
Tayler Christian, senior in sociology, Baldwin City, Undergraduate Travel Award; Logan Joos, senior in chemical engineering, Columbus, Undergraduate Research Award; Maggie Hulett, junior in animal sciences and industry, Colwich, Undergraduate Research Award.
From Greater Kansas City: Taylor Scott, junior in animal sciences and industry, Leawood, Undergraduate Research Award; Nicholas Scherrer, senior in economics, Overland Park, Undergraduate Research Award; and Rachel Nyhart, junior in anthropology, Undergraduate Research Award, and Jamie Teixeira, senior in English, Undergraduate Research Award, both from Shawnee.
Mattie Bieberly, freshman in biology, Hutchinson, Undergraduate Research Award; Kourtney Foley, senior in dietetics, Lecompton, Undergraduate Research Award; Kyle Bayliff, senior in physics and chemistry, Maize, Undergraduate Research Award.
From Manhattan: Alexander Fees, junior in nutritional sciences, Undergraduate Research Award; Sofia Sabates, senior in biology, Undergraduate Travel Award; and Kseniya Sheshukova, sophomore in biological systems engineering, Undergraduate Travel Award.
Caylin Smith, junior in communication studies, Paola, Undergraduate Research Award; Danielle Winters, senior in communication studies, Plainville, Undergraduate Research Award; Timothy Bruner, senior in aeronautical technology, Undergraduate Travel Award, and Trevor Witt, junior in aeronautical technology, Undergraduate Travel Award, both from Salina.
