Salina Car Thief Caught in McPherson

A Salina man was charged with burglary and theft after he loaded up a car he intended to steal – with various items before driving to McPherson.

Captain Mike Sweeney tells KSAL News that 27-year-old Darrel Shannon was taken into custody Thursday after police in McPherson found him in the stolen 2016 Chevy Malibu.

Police say sometime between 11am Tuesday and 4pm Thursday afternoon, Shannon took numerous items from a garage at 529 S. College, placed them in the car and drove off.

Officers found him in possession of 6 gas cans, various tools, 3 refrigerator shelves, golf clubs, a welding helmet and a 12-pack of diet cherry cola.

Combined value of the car and stolen items was over $27,000 and all were recovered.

Captain Sweeney says Shannon and the victim are acquaintances.
