A Friday morning crash leads to the closure of a stretch of Old 81 Highway near Philips Lighting.
According to the Saline County Sheriff’s Office, a mile of US 81 Highway has been closed to traffic after a diesel fuel spill left the driving surface slick. Saline County Undersheriff Roger Soldan says the sunshine Saturday heated up the oil that was spilled on the road and made it greasy and muddy feeling for drivers prompting the closure.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 56-year-old Randall Shaffer of Lawrence was driving a 1995 Ford Ranger, headed north on US 81 Highway.
He went left of center and struck an oncoming 1986 Kenworth truck pulling a trailer head-on.
The crash happened at 8:47 Friday morning, in 4000 block of Old US 81 Highway about a half mile south of the Salina City limits.
