Recent rain has raised water levels at Cheney Reservoir slightly, but officials say more heavy downpours are needed to improve the drought.

The Wichita Eagle reports that Cheney was nearly 68 percent full after rainstorms this week, up 3 to 5 percent from last week.

Brian Haug, park ranger at Cheney Reservoir, says the rain has helped, but steady rain over the summer is needed.

Cheney, which delivers 60 percent of Wichita’s water, was 58 percent full on Feb. 26 when public works officials told the city council that the drought would cause the reservoir to quit providing water in August 2015.

The city’s water advisory committee is also scheduled to present a water conservation plan to the council Tuesday.—
