Salina Arts & Humanities has announced details for the 2016 Pre-Festival Workshop, scheduled for Friday, June 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Salina Art Center Warehouse, 149 S. Fourth Street.

The workshop is connected to one of the River Festival’s commissioned outdoor Artist Installations, entitled Fiber as Place: Home as Land, designed by Wisconsin-based papermaker and itinerant visual artist Robert Possehl.

Known for his work with native, non-native and invasive plant fibers, Possehl seeks to recover the stories and histories embedded in a landscape’s memory by making paper from natural materials.

Workshop participants will learn about papermaking and will assist Possehl with the creation of sheets of handmade paper that form the basic building blocks for Fiber as Place: Home as Land at the Festival. Attendees will learn about making paper from natural plant fibers and will explore place-based papermaking as a means to better understand and honor man’s relationship to place. The come-and-go workshop is free and open to the public. No pre-registration is necessary.

Immediately following Possehl’s visual-arts workshop, Shawn Craver of Wichita, KS will perform from 7 to 8:30 p.m., also at the SAC Warehouse. Craver is an original singer-songwriter who draws from influences including The Cure and Bob Dylan. With a melodic and dreamy sound, Craver’s work features story-like lyrics about life, love and the “existential journey we all find ourselves on.” Admission is free.
