Possible Charges After Child Driver Crashes Into Building

An adult could face charges after a grade-school aged child crashed an SUV into a vacant building in Downtown Salina.

Police Captain Mike Sweeney says that a 2007 GMC Envoy was legally parked in the 200 block of South Santa Fe on Saturday. An adult relative gave the child a key to the vehicle so the child could plug in a portable DVD player to charge it.

The child, unattended in the vehicle, started it and began to drive forward. The SUV jumped a curb, and traveled 18 feet before crashing into the former Key Office building at 214 S. Santa Fe. The impact shattered a plate glass window.

According to Sweeney, the relative who gave the child the keys could possibly be charged with child endangerment.

The child was not hurt.
