Old Salina Hospital To Be Razed

Associated Press - December 5, 2013 6:52 am

St Johns Hospital Complex

The buildings that once housed St. John’s Hospital in Salina will be coming down.

Salina’s Heritage Commission on Wednesday approved plans to demolish the buildings, saying restoring them would be too costly.

Salina Regional Health Center owns the buildings on the St. John’s campus, which has been vacant since 2010.

Jack Hinnenkamp, of Salina Regional Health Center, said it would cost between $1 million and $2 million to demolish the seven-building campus. He said redeveloping the buildings would cost more but didn’t provide any estimates.

St. John’s was started in 1914 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Concordia and operated by the Wichita-based Sisters of St. Joseph until 1995.

Why not sell the complex to someone that would be willing to do something with them. Evidently the buildings could be put to good use especially the newer south building. Evidently Jack and his employer do not wish to do the right thing. Hope Salina Regional never looks for bonds or money assistance from us taxpayers.

Mr. Hanson, you have an excellent idea. Why do you not go out and locate that “someone” who would buy the buildings and put them to good use? I am sure that there must be many firms that have millions of dollars lying around that they would be willing to spend to remodel old buildings to suit their use rather than build a new facility for less money.

It is ashame to see such a cool looking old building being torn down but mehh…it’s all in the name of progress right? I would be nice to see the area have something useful put there afterwards.
