Portteus S. (Corporon) Hughes, 88, of McPherson, KS, passed away at 7:55 AM, Saturday, January 18th, while in the company of family members, at McPherson Hospital. Portie was born in Arcadia, KS on June 13, 1925, the daughter of the late Portteus V. (Stephens) and George William Corporon.

Portie attended and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1943. She attended and graduated from Mt. Carmel Hospital Nursing School, Pittsburg, Kansas in 1946.

Portie was a member of the First Christian Church McPherson, KS. She was a member of the Christian Womens Fellowship, church choir, the Homebuilders Sunday School Class and Diciples Women.

Portie served in the Cadet Nurse Corps. Portie was a Registered Nurse for Dr. V. C. Price McPherson, Kansas, for 17 years. She also was a nurse at the Cedars Nursing Home, McPherson, Kansas for 7 years. Portie was a member of the Progressive Homemaker EHU, the Hospital Auxiliary and the sewing club.

Portteus S. Corporon was united in marriage to Claude Lee Hughes on February 28, 1948 at Arcadia, Kansas.

She is survived by -

Sister: Mary Virginia Shead, of Arcadia, Kansas
Brothers: Nelson Osborne Corporon, of Lexington, Missouri
Charles Edward Corporon of Pittsburg, Kansas
John Robert (Harriett) Corporon of Brooklyn, New York

Portie was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, George William Corporon, Jr., Lewis Cass Corporon; sister, Margaret Wickstrom; husband, Claude Hughes.

Memorial Service will be held at the First Christian Church, McPherson, KS, at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, February 7th, 2014 with Pastor Lynn Scott, Reverend Chris Whitacre and Mr. Don Brewer officiating.

Visitors may greet the family following the service in the fellowship hall of the church.

Private family inurnment of cremains will precede the service at the McPherson Cemetery McPherson, KS.
