Miriam Evelyn Ely, 93, of Inman, Kansas, passed away at 5:06 a.m., Friday, December 6th, while in the company of family members, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, Kansas.
Miriam was born in Inman, Kansas on May 22, 1920, a daughter of Eva (Hofmeier) and Fred Lewis.
Miriam attended the Inman grade schools, and graduated from Inman High School, Inman, Kansas in 1938. She later then attended Sidneys Hairdressing College, in Hutchinson, Kansas.
Miriam was a member of St. Peters United Church of Christ Inman, Kansas, where Miriam was a member of Womens Fellowship and served her church in several other capacities.
Miriam was a homemaker and owned and operated Miriams Beauty Shop in Inman, Kansas.
Miriam was a member of the Blue Bird Club and Phidelis Club both of Inman, Kansas. Miriam enjoyed singing, playing organ, spending time at their cabin at Kanopolis Lake, sewing, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Miriam and Gene enjoyed the many trips to Las Vegas.
Miriam Lewis was united in marriage to Gene W. Ely on July 30, 1938 at McPherson, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together rural McPherson County. During W.W. II the couple moved to Wichita, Kansas and Gene entered into United States Army Air Force and Miriam worked as a secretary for Boeing. This union was blessed with the birth of two children, a son and a daughter, Gary and Pam. After the War when Gene returned they moved to Eastern Kansas for about 13 years and lived in rural Thayer, Kansas. In 1955 the family moved back to Inman, Kansas.
Surviving family members include her loving and devoted husband of over 75 years, Gene Ely, of Inman, Kansas; her children, Gary Ely and his wife Betty, of Hutchinson, Kansas and Pam Regehr and her husband Galen, of McPherson, Kansas; her six grandchildren, Russell Ely and his wife Angie, of Hutchinson, Kansas, Lowell Ely and his wife Paula, of Inman, Kansas, Darrell Ely and his wife Dana, of Hutchinson, Kansas, Kelli Lusk and her husband Lance, of Hutchinson, Kansas, Lisa Schmidt and her husband D.J., of El Dorado, Kansas, and Jodi Hirsh and her husband Dustin, of North Newton, Kansas; 13-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Miriam was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Dean, Ward, and Wade Lewis; and sisters, Virgie Fretz, Myra Bigelow, Joan Lewis, and Ardys Lewis; and a great-grandson, Nicholas Regehr Parsons.
The memorial service will be held at St. Peters United Church of Christ, Inman, Kansas, at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 with Reverend Dennis L. Ureche officiating.
The final resting place will be at the North Inman Cemetery Inman, Kansas at a later date.
