Kenneth H. Riffel, 80, lifelong resident of Herington, died Wednesday, July 10th, 2013, at the Stormont-Vail Medical Center, Topeka. He was born on January 27th, 1933, at Herington, the son of John H. and Marie K. (Meier) Riffel.
Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am Tuesday, July 16th, 2013, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Herington; with Pastor Bill Peterson officiating.
Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery, Herington.
The family will receive friends Monday, July 15th, from 7:00pm until 8:00pm at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel.
Mr. Riffel was a retired railroad conductor. He also owned and operated many businesses in Herington (Riffels Ditching Service, Pat Car Wash, & Fifth Street Storage) and farmed south of Herington. He began working at Beech Aircraft in Wichita, then the Rock Island Railroad, and finally retired from the Union Pacific Railroad. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, a Mason, a York Rite Member, and a member of the ISIS Shrine. He graduated from Herington High School with the class of 1951, and then started college on a music scholarship.
He had numerous hobbies over his lifetime such as go-carts, stock cars, slot cars, and hot rod tractors to name a few. He also enjoyed boating, water skiing, horseback riding, 4-wheeling, fishing, and camping; and in the winter snowmobiling & snow skiing.
Married Patty Joan Strunk on June 26, 1953, at the First Baptist Church, Herington; she preceded in death on May 9, 1997.
He is also preceded in death by two (2) daughters: Terry Carlson (03/11/2012) and an infant daughter Bobbi Jane Riffel (08/29/1955), a half-brother Lawrence Riffel (06/08/1997), and his parents John (03/16/1983) and Marie (07/10/1979).
