Charles Ivan Prather, 67, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly at 3:01 p.m., Thursday, June 27, 2013, in McPherson, Kansas. Charles was born in Dodge City, Kansas on March 18, 1946, the son of Mary (Bechtel) and Frederick Hilton Prather.

Charles attended Meade Grade School and graduated from Meade High School, Meade, Kansas in 1964. He then attended and graduated from Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas in 1968. After a few years of teaching, he then attended and graduated from Washburn University School of Law, Topeka, Kansas where he received his law degree.

Charles was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ where he served his church in many capacities which included choir director for many years, and was currently filling the pulpit while the church was searching for a new pastor.

Charles honorably served his Country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Through the years, Charles was a high school history teacher in Arkansas City, Kansas, and then practiced law in McPherson, Kansas, establishing his own office, Charles I. Prather Attorney. He worked for McPherson County in several capacities including his position as the District Court Trustee for over twenty-five years.

Charles was a member of the Washburn Law School Association, Kansas Bar Association, and the Kansas Child Support Enforcement Association. He was a longtime member of the McPherson Kiwanis Club and recently served as vice president for the Kansas Chapter of Kiwanis International. He was an avid bowler and was a member of the McPherson Bowling Association for 37 years, bowled at least two perfect 300 games, and was inducted into the McPherson Bowling Association Hall of Fame. He was a Cub Master for Pack # 133, Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 133, and was himself an Eagle Scout. On June 9, 2013 he became Licensed to Ministry in the Western - Central Association of the Kansas - Oklahoma Conference United Church of Christ, and was involved with his community in many other capacities.

Charles I. Prather was united in marriage to Cynthia J. Bidwell on December 18, 1967 in Eldorado, Kansas.

Linda Prather, of Leavenworth, Kansas
Grandsons: Joshua Aaron Prather Stern, Leesburg VA
Alexander Jacob Prather Stern, Leesburg VA
Andrew Charles Prather Stern, Leesburg VA
Niece and several nephews
Other relatives and a host of friends

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Hilton Prather and a brother, John Prather.

Friends are invited to call on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 from 4 to 7 p.m. with family present at Glidden - Ediger Chapel, McPherson, Kansas.

The funeral service will be held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, McPherson, KS, at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2013.
