New Saline County Commission Meets

Among other things, the Saline County Commission reorganized when the new 5-person board met for their first scheduled meeting Tuesday.

Monte Shadwick is the new commission chair, Jim Gile is the vice-chair, and John Price is the secretary.

After discussing reorganization, commissioners then discussed, and were briefed on how the board has traditionally operated. The new 5-person commission will initially operate under the same schedule, meeting throughout the day on Tuesdays, with a formal televised meeting at 11:00. Commissioners did indicate that they are keeping open the possibility of changing the schedule, including possibly pushing back the time of the televised formal meeting to later in the afternoon.

Among other items discussed were the appointment of former commissioner Randy Duncan as a citizen representative of the Salina Economic Development Incentives Council. As one of their last acts, the outgoing 3 person commission Monday morning in their final meeting appointed Duncan to the position. New commissioner David Smith asked if there were other qualified candidates, and also expressed some concern that the action appeared to be “self-serving”.

Smith also brought up the topic of commissioner’s salaries. The commission did not get into a discussion about the topic, but indicated that it is something that will be discussed in the near future.
