Multiple Memorial Day Events Planned

Ceremonies to remember, and honor those who have died while serving our country will be held in Salina, and across Kansas on Memorial Day Monday.

Three different events are planned in Salina.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars will host the first event beginning at 10:00, at Gypsum Hill Cemetery.

The second event will follow immediately, hosted by the American Legion, in Roselawn Cemetery.

Ceremonies will culminate with the third event at 11:00 at the Saline County War Memorial in Sunset Park. Lt. Col. Richard Fisher, commander of the Great Plains Joint Training Center based in Salina, will be the featured speaker.

Numerous other ceremonies are also planned across the state, many with support from the Kansas National Guard.

All of the following events are scheduled for Sunday, May 29, 2016.

Norcatur

Col. Dave Johnson, chief of staff, 35th Infantry Division, will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day ceremony at the Norcatur Cemetery. The ceremony begins at 2 p.m.

All of the following events are scheduled for Monday, May 30, 2016.

Attica

Maj. Brent Buckley, 69th Troop Command, will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day ceremony at the Attica Cemetery. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m.

Augusta

1st Sgt. Christopher Hargis, first sergeant, 226th Engineer Company, will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day ceremony sponsored by the Augusta Memorial VFW 6746 at the Elmwood Cemetery. The ceremony begins at 9 a.m.

Clifton

Staff Sgt. Andrew Hughes, training noncommissioned officer, Detachment 1, 995th Maintenance Company, will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day ceremony in Clifton. The ceremony, sponsored by the Clifton American Legion Post, begins at 10 a.m. in Berner Memorial Park.

Derby

Maj. Trenton Shepherd, 184th Security Forces Squadron, 184th Intelligence Wing, will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day ceremony at the El Paso Cemetery, 700 E Kay St. Riders from the Derby VFW Post 7253 and Derby American Legion Post 408 will lay wreaths, followed by a 21-gun salute and flag dedication/folding ceremony. The ceremony begins at 9 a.m.

Emporia

Capt. Kendrea Shingleton, brigade logistics officer, 130th Field Artillery Brigade, will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day Ceremony at Veteran’s Park.  The ceremony begins at 9 a.m.

Greenleaf

Staff Sgt. Jeffrey A Metz, training noncommissioned officer for Battery A, 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery, will be the guest speaker at the Memorial Day service sponsored by the Greenleaf American Legion Post at the Greenleaf City Cemetery. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m.

Hiawatha

Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery will participate in a Memorial Day ceremony sponsored by the American Legion Homer-White Post #66. The ceremony will be held at the Brown County Historical Society Veterans Memorial Auditorium, 611 Utah St., and will begin at 10 a.m.

Holton

Col. Tom Burke, commander, 69th Troop Command, will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day ceremony at the Holton town square.  The ceremony begins at 12 p.m.

Iuka

Maj. Gen. Victor Braden, commander, 35th Infantry Division, will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day ceremony at the United Methodist Church, 302 W. McClellan Ave.  The ceremony begins at 10 a.m.

Norton

Sgt. 1st Class Lance Jones, readiness noncommissioned officer, 995th Support Maintenance Company, will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day ceremony at the Norton Cemetery, north side of town on Highway 283.  The ceremony begins at 11 a.m.

Olsburg

Maj. Adam Johnson, training officer for 69th Troop Command, will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day ceremony sponsored by American Legion Post 284.  The ceremony will be held at the Mariahdahl Cemetery, 4073 Hwy 16.  Members of American Legion Post 284 will raise flags and present a 21-gun salute during the ceremony which begins at 11 a.m.

Phillipsburg

Sgt. Joe Leroux, battalion retention noncommissioned officer for the 997th Brigade Support Battalion, will be the guest speaker for a Memorial Day ceremony at the Fairview Cemetery, Hwy 183 and Park St., Phillipsburg. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. Another ceremony.will be held at the Glade cemetery immediately following.

Pratt

Maj. Gen. Victor Braden, commander, 35th Infantry Division, will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day ceremony at the Pratt Municipal Airport B-29 All Vets Memorial, 40096 Runway Blvd. The ceremony begins at 2 p.m.

Salina

Lt. Col. Richard Fisher, Great Plains Joint Training Center, will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day ceremony at Sunset Park War Memorial, 700 sunset Drive. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m.

Topeka

Brig. Gen. Robert Windham, commander of the Kansas Army National Guard and assistant adjutant general – Army, will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day ceremony at Mount Hope Cemetery, 17th & Fairlawn.  The ceremony begins at 11 a.m.

Lt. Col. Erich Campbell, senior Army advisor, Kansas Army National Guard, will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day ceremony at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 6th & Gage.  The ceremony begins at 10 a.m.

Wichita

Master Sgt. Kenny Everett, Master Sgt. Peter Massad, Tech. Sgt. Chris Barth, Tech. Sgt. Sheldon Dillinger, Tech. Sgt. Steven Parker and Senior Airman Brian Stiner, 184th Intelligence Wing, will provide a rifle detail for a Memorial Day ceremony at the Wilson Legion (On Old US 40).  The ceremony begins at 10 a.m.

Capt. Dave Olds, 184th Intelligence Wing, will be conducting fly-overs with the “Jayhawk Wing” of the Commemorative Air Force based out of Wichita on Memorial Day.  The CAF Jayhawk Wing will fly three vintage World War II aircraft over Kansas Memorial Day ceremonies in Arkansas City, Dorrance, Ellsworth, Wellington, Wichita, and Wilson.

Wilson

Maj. Daniel Mehlhaff, , executive officer, 997th Brigade Support Battalion, will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day ceremony at the Wilson Cemetery (east side of town at the intersection of 2nd Road and 31st Street).  The ceremony begins at 10 a.m.
